GS1 Digital Link & 2D barcodes — what's changing

One code, two jobs: point-of-sale scanning and consumer-facing information, in the same barcode.

GS1 is rolling out a next-generation barcode format — a 2D barcode built on the "GS1 Digital Link" standard — designed to eventually sit alongside, and in some cases replace, the traditional linear barcode.

What's actually different

A traditional GS1 barcode encodes only the GTIN. A GS1 Digital Link 2D barcode encodes the GTIN plus a web URL — so the same code that a retail scanner reads for checkout can also be scanned by a consumer's phone camera to open product information, authenticity details, or care instructions.

Why GS1 is pushing this transition

One code doing both jobs (point-of-sale scanning and consumer-facing information) removes the need for separate QR codes and barcodes crowding the same package, and gives brands a standards-compliant way to connect physical products to digital content.

What this means for your registration today

You don't need to act immediately — GS1 India continues to support and issue standard linear-barcode GTINs, and the transition to 2D is gradual with a long overlap period. It's worth knowing this is coming so that packaging redesigns you're already planning can account for the extra digital-link space if relevant to your category.
